Did You Know Cats Make Amazing Portrait Subjects Too?
I recently had the pleasure of capturing a "4 Paws Over 10" session with Katelyn and her senior feline companion, Katya. At 19 years young, Katya is proof that age is just a number!
She’s as spry as ever, letting her “staff” (because, as cat lovers know, cats have staff, not owners) know exactly what she wants. As we laughed about how Katya had her own agenda, Katelyn shared the story of how they became family.
Katya was adopted by Katelyn’s former partner from his parents, who raised her in Russia. Katya tolerated Katelyn for years, though Katelyn loved her all the same. After some time and persuasion, Katelyn convinced her partner to get a puppy—on the condition it be a Golden Retriever. A search led to Lake joining the family.
For our session, we made sure Katya’s sweet but independent personality shone through. She was the focus for us all doing this after all!
Lake's spunky side shown through, with a sweet and goofy disposition. Even at 7 years old, Lake acts like a puppy, which keeps Katya on her toes!

We included an heirloom quilt from Katelyn’s family, and when Katya took a break, Lake had her moment in the spotlight. The light, weather, and Katelyn’s denim blue dress were perfect for capturing these memories together, and we were even able to secure a beautiful family portrait of Katya, Lake, and Katelyn all together!

Now 7, Lake is Katelyn’s “soul dog”—friendly, full of energy, and never meeting a stranger. Over the past year, Katelyn and Katya have grown closer; Katya now loves being held, giving little kisses, and insists on her mid-day treat. Recently diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, Katya’s comfort and happiness have become Katelyn’s focus. Isn’t that what we should all aim for with our furry loved ones? Embracing every moment, big and small. 🐾.
Thank you Katelyn for letting me into just a little moment of time with your loving family!
